As part of the largest cold storage network in the world, Americold have a key warehouse at
Auckland Airport, Auckland, New Zealand. Due to the issues with the existing Glycol sprinkler
system installed in the warehouse, the consultant chose to replace it with a roof only preaction
system.
The Victaulic Upright LP-46 was chosen as the sprinkler head for the project due to its low
pressure requirements, and its ability to provide roof only protection and eliminate the need
for in-rack sprinklers. The fact that the LP-46 had undergone full scale testing to authenticate
its performance with FM Global, gave comfort to all parties with regards acceptability.
The harsh environment of -28˚C in an operating freezer, with business needing to continue
as usual for Americold, meant for the contractor, Argus Fire Protection, the labour force were
only allowed to work cold side for 30 minutes in the hour. The electric powered platforms
used for installation of the roof level pipework were also effected by the extreme cold and tool
battery life was seriously lessened.
The contractors, Argus Fire Protection sought innovative products that could reduce the time
in the freezer that would bring a competitive advantage as well as health and safety benefits.
Victaulic FireLock EZ® Style 009H rigid couplings were used as they significantly reduced
the time spent in the cold, and the shape and performance of the gasket meant they could
be used right out of the box. Victaulic FireLock NXT® Series 769 Pre-action device was the
valveset of choice due to its speed of response, simplicity of operation and reduced footprint.
The valvesets were delivered to the site in Vic® Quick Ready (VQR) fully pre-trimmed,
requiring only minimal on-site work.

CPI LuYang Power Generation Facility

Located in Henan Province, China, the LuYang power station is the backbone of Central China's power generation. Owned by CPI and the local government of Henan Province, the LuYang power station operates at the highest output level of all power plants in the region, with a peak output capacity of 2000MW.

Due to the large diameter of the pipes and the need to accommodate movements associated with thermal expansion and contraction and seismic shifts, Victaulic couplings and expansion joint couplings were chosen to be installed on the pulverized coal piping system. In addition, Victaulic Firelock valves and devices were chosen to be installed on the power plant's fire protection system. Located at the waterfront of Hong Kong’s Central District, the Tamar Development Project is the HKSAR Government’s brand new multimillion dollar headquarters, housing the Central Government Headquarters, the Legislative Council and the Chief Executive Office. Faced with a tight schedule of only 39 weeks, the need for a large range of pipe sizes (½ – 28"), and the stringent requirements for thermal movement and seismic shift accommodation, the contractor selected Victaulic piping solutions for a fast, safe and reliable installation of the building’s chilled and hot water systems. Located in Seongnam, South Korea, Pankyo Techno Valley has become the Korean counterpart of Silicon Valley in the US, housing dozens of R&D and innovation companies. Among its many tenants is Innovalley Inc., a Silicon Valley-based innovation company that recently moved its South Korean office to the heart of Pankyo Techno Valley. The new 10-story office building measures over 67,000 square meters, and received the equivalent of $157 million US dollars in investments.

To complete the installation within an accelerated construction time period of 22 months, the owner and contractor relied on Victaulic products, which allowed them to install the system two to three times faster and more efficiently than welding, resulting in cost and time savings. SM E-Com 2 Call Center

When designing the new SM E-COM 2 Call Center and Office Building in Pasay City, Philippines, the contractor required pump dressings for pipe up to 14" in size. Since the building’s pump room is located on the roof, it was necessary to select a leak-free system that was also capable of accommodating system vibration and movement associated with seismic forces.

In order to supply the building with a reliable fire protection system, the contractor required a grooved system not only of valves, fittings and couplings, but also including a pre-action device system in an enclosed cabinet. Victaulic Adds Two-Piece Style 77 Coupling for Large Diameters to its Array of Mining Piping Systems

EASTON, Pa. – April 10, 2012 – Victaulic, the world's leading manufacturer of mechanical pipe joining systems, announces a major update to its Style 77 coupling. The two-piece coupling, a mainstay in the mining industry, is now available in 14 to 24-inch sizes (350 to 600 millimeters). The two-piece Style 77 was previously only available for pipe ¾-inch to 12 inches (20 to 300 millimeters); a multi-piece housing was required for pipe 14 to 24 inches in diameter.

The Style 77 coupling, designed for cut grooved systems, creates a flexible joint and is ideal for abrasive service piping, such as tailings and slurry lines. Maintaining the same design characteristics as the multi-segment coupling, the new two-piece design reduces handling and enables easier and quicker installation.

The Style 77 is rated for 300 psi service (2065 kPa) from 14 to 22 inches (350 to 550 millimeters), and for 250 psi service (1725 kPa) in the 24-inch size (600 millimeters). It is available with a grade “E” EPDM gasket for water services or a grade “T” nitrile gasket for air with oil vapors.

La Tour First - CB 31

The CB 31 or First Tower in the Défense business quarter of Paris was originally constructed in 1974 and since 2007 has undergone a major internal and external transformation. The CB 31 has been further extended from 159m to 225m, making it the highest skyscraper in France today. Completed in April 2011, the refurbishment also included an extension to the existing tower of a podium, a larger ground floor to introduce more light into the entrance hall of the tower and a new fire protection system.

When TPI/Vinci, the contractor managing the refurbishment at the tower, was looking at specifying the fire protection piping systems, key considerations were how to install both quickly and safely, particularly in the tight spaces available. Most critical however was that the standard higher pressure rating of the products the team would install had to be 20 bar. Victaulic met the specification and its fire protection devices are now installed throughout three floors of the underground parking. Victaulic couplings, fittings and sprinkler heads are also employed in all 51 floors of the tower and its risers.

Installing the FireLock NXT devices meant that TPI/Vinci was able to make huge time savings. Victaulic products were selected on the basis of stringent security criteria and product reliability, which are key when refurbishing such a tall structure.

With a seating capacity of over 58,000, the new national stadium in Warsaw will be the home of the opening match of the UEFA 2012 European Football Championship, hosted jointly in Poland and in Ukraine. Construction of the stadium began in 2008 and was completed at the end of 2011, with an official opening celebration, on February 29, 2012. The new stadium will not only function as a football stadium, but as an arena for other various sports, concerts, and conventions as well. Due to its unique oval-shaped design, constructing its potable water system proved to be challenging for engineer HTW Düsseldorf.

Specifying Victaulic grooved products offered HTW Düsseldorf a reliable solution to meet the design challenge, as well as its high quality requirements. By working with Victaulic Construction Piping Services, the teams were able
to come up with a solution for accommodating the curved design of the potable water system. The curved piping system was formed using specially engineered stainless steel elbows, ranging from 8° to 11° angles, and installing them with Victaulic flexible couplings.

Working with the Victaulic team and employing Victaulic products allowed Imtech Polska to finish the project in time for the 2012 official opening.

Warsaw Okecie Airport Renovation

Warsaw Chopin Airport, formerly Warsaw-Okecie Airport, is an international airport located in the Włochy district of Warsaw. Warsaw Chopin manages nearly 50% of Poland's air passenger traffic. Adding to its history of several renovations over a span of decades, the airport's North Pier Terminal recently underwent construction, with a particular focus on its existing cooling system.

Engineer, Pol-Con Consulting, specified Victaulic products for this job due to their reliability, and the speed and safety they provide during installation. Victaulic piping systems also provide a flame-free joining method, which assists in avoidingdangerous hot works at a fully operational airport. The Series 761 Vic-300 MasterSeal® butterfly valves worked to replace flanged valves, the Style 75 Flexible Couplings were installed to accommodate piping movement, and the Series 732 wye type Vic-Strainers were installed to ease future system maintenance. Tunnel Under Vistula River

The new 1300 metre long tunnel under the Vistula River, the first tunnel in Poland that benefited from the unique Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) technology, is a key element to transmit waste water from the left bank districts of Warsaw to the Czajka waste water treatment plant, located on the right side of the river. In the tunnel, with an inner diameter of 4.5 metres, are two routes of pipelines, with a diameter of 1.6 metres each. It will also include the track for a service railway car, ventilation systems, closed circuit television and other installations. In order to have a safe, fast and reliable installation of the water, compressed air and slurry lines, Victaulic pipe joining system was selected. Installing Victaulic products allowed contractors, PRG Metro and Hydrobudowa 9SA, to benefit from some of the unique characteristics other joining methods don’t have. By installing Victaulic Style 75 and Style 77 flexible couplings, they were able to accommodate the system’s curvature and movement. Because using Victaulic products only requires tightening of two bolts and nuts to join a piece of pipe, the installation of the three piping systems could be carried out much faster than when welding or flanging, thus compressing the construction schedule. Because Victaulic products don’t require hotworks to join pipes, jobsite safety was guaranteed and none of the installers were exposed to hazardous fumes. Employing Victaulic products resulted in a speedy and reliable installation that not only helped to reduce total installed cost but also helped to secured jobsite safety.

The February 2012 issue of Engineers Australia featured an article about the AgriBio Research Centre in Melbourne, Australia. La Trobe University and the Victorian Department of Primary Industries will occupy the space once it is completed later this year. Located in the suburb of Bundoora, the $288 million centre began construction in May 2009 and will accommodate up to 400 staff and students. Contractor James Williams chose Victaulic

Tam Dao 01 Self-Elevating Drilling Rig

The Tam Dao 01 Drilling Rig is a 60-meter-deep mobile offshore self-elevating drilling rig developed by PetroVietnam Corporation and locally built by PV Marine Shipyard JSC in Vung Tau City. This is the first self-elevating drilling rig built locally in Vietnam according to international standards, marking a major advancement in jack-up drilling rig technology in Vietnam and broadening the industry to both domestic and international markets.

Requiring a quality and reliable product, the contractor selected Victaulic couplings, fittings and valves to create a Delta piping system for slurry and dry bulk pipelines. The ease and speed of installation that Victaulic provided helped the contractor compress his construction schedule. In addition, by providing a union at every joint, Victaulic products will allow for easy disassembly and reassembly for system cleaning and maintenance while at

West Pender Place

Located in the prime Coal Harbour neighbourhood of downtown Vancouver, the high profile West Pender Place complex features a 44 story West Tower with a seven story parkade connected to two ten story East Towers, making it one of the most prominent high rise residential/commercial construction projects of 2011 in Vancouver.

To meet the fire protection needs of this facility, the contractor, Secure Fire Protection, insisted upon the use of Victaulic FireLock® systems. Secure was confident in the proven track record of quality and trusted performance that Victaulic products deliver, having used them for over 10 years on other major projects. For West Pender Place, over 5000 couplings, 9000 sprinkler heads, 40 high pressure butterfly valves and seven devices were installed.

Being a high-rise facility, the West Pender Place system needed to effectively handle high pressures up to 350 psi/2517kPa. In the valve room, Victaulic FireLock NXT® Series 768 Dry devices with Vic®-Quick Risers were the preferred choice. Rated to 300 psi/2065 kPa, the highest in the industry, FireLock NXT® devices provided the the greatest level of comfort for use on this project. AgrioBio, Centre for AgriBioscience is a joint initiative of the Government of Victoria and La Trobe University. Located at La Trobe University’s main campus in Bundoora, Victoria, AgriBio will be one of Australia’s premier bioscience facilities, with a key emphasis on supporting and protecting Victoria’s AUD$11.8 billion agricultural sector by focusing on cutting-edge research to improve productivity, fight disease and reduce environmental impact.

HVAC contracting firm James L. Williams was hired to manage the design and installation of the building’s cooling system, under a very tight build schedule. To meet the deadline, the contracting firm chose to use Victaulic’s full mechanical pipe joining system for its ability to cut installation time by up to 30%. In addition, James L. Williams utilised Victaulic’s Construction Piping Services (CPS) drawing package to provide 3D system drawings and analysis of system requirements, and to calculate the required work hours and manpower for the project.

The building will have Victaulic couplings, valves and joints installed across its chilled water, condensed water, and heating hot water systems.

Edmonton Clinic North

Edmonton Clinic North is a 570,000 sq.ft./53,000 sq.m. state-of-the-art academic teaching and administration facility for the University of Alberta.

Faced with the task of having the entire penthouse mechanical room operational in 7 months, the contractor, Lockerbie & Hole, turned to Victaulic for a total system solution that would maximize productivity. To ensure efficient piping layout and coordination, the Victaulic Construction Piping Services team designed a coordinated set of 3D models, isometric drawings and bill of materials. Using Victaulic Bag and Tag services, all products were ordered and delivered where and when needed.

To expedite installation of the piping systems, many sections of piping were prefabricated in the contractor's shop. Victaulic Quick-Vic® couplings, featuring patented installation-ready technology, maximized productivity by ensuring fast and easy pipe connections for systems up to 8"/200mm in size. Featuring a proprietary Grade "EHP" gasket rated to 250°F/121°C, these couplings provide unmatched performance on the hot water systems. To join 14"/350mm piping, Victaulic Advanced Groove System (AGS) couplings with only two housings enabled fast, easy connections that could be visually inspected for proper assembly. Victaulic pump components, Style 155 expansion joints, TA balancing valves and the 3-piece Victaulic Koil-Kit™ for rapid coil installation were additional solutions that addressed unique facility needs.

Capital Plaza

The Capital Plaza project, in the centre of Abu Dhabi, consists of a 250-room five-star hotel tower (the Millennium & Copthorne Hotel), with 32 floors and a height of 166m, a 25,000 square meters office building with 34 floors and a height of 200m, and 220 luxury apartments including 21 sky villas and six rooftop villa apartments located in three towers ranging from 173m to 210m in height. There are also retail facilities and five levels of basement and underground car parking.

Work on the Capital Plaza fire protection systems began in 2007 with the main contractor, the Arabian Construction Company, carrying out installations throughout the entire development and working closely with engineer Concorde Co. LLC. Concorde chose to install a complete range of fire protection products manufactured by Victaulic, including a full range of sprinklers, valves, wet and deluge valves, open spray nozzles, couplings and fittings. The project manager at Concorde chose Victaulic products because of the great reputation, product range and quality. Concorde has worked with Victaulic before and found their products help to reduce onsite problems. Concorde also relied on Victaulic for the most key products in the entire fire protection installation: the alarm valves. The reason why they chose Victaulic FireLock® devices is because of the straight-through body design, which provides superior flow and low-pressure drop. The devices also offer simple access to all internal parts for easy maintenance, which can be performed from the installed position. FP installation on this enormous project is now complete to NFPA standards. The hotel opened in August, 2011 and the residential towers are already being used.

Ferrari World

One of the most technically impressive projects in the region, Ferrari World Abu Dhabi required a fire protection system that could match the prestige and challenge associated with its illustrious name. The world's largest indoor theme park, comprised of 86,000 m² of indoor space, features 20 rides and attractions, designed to bring to life the Ferrari story, and is home to the world's fastest roller coaster, Formula Rossa. There are also six food and beverage outlets.

Firepro, who served as engineer and contractor, specified Victaulic fire protection products because of the high quality and reliability they provide. Installation began in February 2008 and was finished by mid 2010, the length of time gives an idea of the vast scope of work involved in the installation. Throughout the Ferrari World site, Firepro used Victaulic FireLock® elbows, tees and reducers, as well as Victaulic couplings. These included the lightweight Style 75 coupling, the FireLock Style 005 rigid coupling and the FireLock No. 001 90° Elbow and No. 002 Straight

Eighth Avenue Place, a 50-story tower located in Canada, has become a landmark in the skyline of Calgary. The newly constructed tower was awarded LEED Gold precertification, and provides over 1.8 million square feet of commercial office space for the city’s growing business community.

In order to conserve schedule time the contractor, Modern Niagara Alberta, who arranged for the pipe to be cut and grooved off-site, also chose to install Victaulic product to facilitate rapid installation of the heating, chilled and condenser water, glycol heating, sanitary lift stations, and domestic water systems.

Victaulic Quick-Vic® couplings, featuring patented installation-ready technology, maximized productivity by ensuring fast and easy pipe connections for systems up to 8"/200mm in size. Due to their proven performance and life expectancy, Vic-300 MasterSeal Butterfly Valves were utilized in each system installation, and larger diameter 14 - 18"/350 - 450mm piping, including riser systems, were fabricated and joined using Victaulic Advanced Groove System (AGS) couplings and fittings.

“Victaulic mechanical couplings decreased installation time tremendously," said Doug MacDonald, Construction Manager. "A standard 18-inch weld would have taken anywhere between three to four hours to complete while the installation of one mechanical coupling took about ten minutes. Overall, by using Victaulic products, building Eighth Avenue Place required significantly less labor that would have been used if we had welded the piping systems".

Eighth Avenue Place is also one of the first buildings in Canada to utilize the Victaulic supplied TA Differential Pressure Controller. By eliminating pressure fluctuations, the TA Differential Pressure Controller enables the balancing valve to maintain the proper flow rate at the coil and keep the system balanced.

ZeaChem will be one of the first cellulosic demonstration plants built in the United States. The plant will produce Ethanol, glacial acetic acid, and commercial grade ethyl acetate from poplar trees. ZeaChem will produce products from organic materials that will be a direct replacement for similar petroleum based products for refining, consumer products, paint and chemical industries.

Prior to construction ZeaChem began looking for the most economical means to complete the project. The Victaulic pipe-joining system involves cold forming or machining a groove into the end of a pipe. Pipe sections are then connected by a coupling, which houses a resilient, pressure-responsive elastomer gasket that creates a leak-tight seal. The bolts and nuts are tightened, securing the coupling housings together, and the key sections of the coupling engage the groove on each pipe-end, creating a strong, reliable joint.

The construction of the new First Energy – W. H. Sammis Power Plant in Empire, Ohio included the installation of two Babcock & Wilcox wet scrubbers to reduce SO² emissions. After cost comparisons and performance and maintenance tests by the Victaulic sales team, First Energy decided to install the Victaulic Style 220 317LMN alloy scrubber nozzle couplings.

CHIHUAHUA, MEXICO (September 21, 2011) – Victaulic, the world’s leading supplier of mechanical pipe joining solutions, today announced the opening of its new manufacturing facility in Chihuahua. The site is one of the largest Victaulic facilities in the world. Now, Victaulic has 11 production facilities and 20 branches globally.

Victaulic expanded its manufacturing capacities and capabilities to better serve customers in the southern region of the United States, Mexico, Latin America and South America. The new 133,000-square-foot facility on 30 acres of land includes a ductile iron foundry, machining and assembly capabilities, as well as local operations offices.

The new Chihuahua site will produce Victaulic custom castings and large-diameter pipe joining products up to 72 inches/1829 mm. This addition will broaden the scope of castings and manufacturing services offered, as well as the ability to meet the diverse and critical needs of casting customers. Further, by opening the Chihuahua foundry, Victaulic is able to expand its iron casting to include larger custom castings—up to 700 pounds in weight. Also, as the new regional distribution center, the facility will deliver products more efficiently, reducing transportation time and saving project contractors time and money.

This facility joins the Victaulic Queretaro branch, increasing capabilities for customer training and further enhancing regional support.

With the ability to withstand pressures of up to 1,200 psi (8200 kPa), the Series 726D is ideal for high pressure applications in corrosive environments, such as reverse osmosis and desalination piping systems.

The Series 726D is a grooved-end, high-pressure, full-port ball valve that provides faster, easier and safer installation than flanged or butt-weld valves. The valve is connected with the Victaulic Style 489DX rigid coupling, which requires only two bolts to form a secure joint, making field assembly extremely fast. The brand new Cowboys Stadium—home of the world famous Dallas Cowboys professional football team—features the latest in stadium technology and showcases the longest arch of steel in the United States. Due to the large crowds housed in the arena, as well as the “cannot fail” equipment such as the scoreboard and announcement system, a dependable, easily installed and easy to maintain fire protection system was required. Victaulic grooved mechanical joining solutions, sprinkler heads, devices and UL/FM valves were chosen for this project not only because of the dependability, but because of the cost savings inherent in the installation. Instead of using cut grooved schedule 40 carbon steel pipe, the use of Victaulic grooved products allowed the engineer to specify roll grooved schedule 10 carbon steel, saving approximately 50% in overall pipe materials. Additionally, the installation of the Style 75 flexible coupling accommodated for the gradual curve of the pipe run around the overall structure and eliminated the need for hundreds of additional fittings, saving both time and money. Finally, the pre-trimmed, ready-to-install Victaulic Quick riser valve configurations afforded addition time and cost savings. Nearly 70 distinct fire protection systems were required within the complex, ranging from sophisticated electronic detection preaction system to small diameter dry systems. The breadth of sizes and types of valve systems from Victaulic was key to the success of the design and installation. “The hands-on support from the Victaulic specialist, both at the project management level and on the jobsite, helped ensure dependable product availability and installation,” said Greg Lee of DFW Fire Protection, the contractor.
